Lion Modeling WIP

Modeling.. modeling.. it always take longer than you expect.. topology is tricky business. There aren't enough time to quad-ify everything, looks like I'll have to live with some triangles...

By my current progress, it looks like I will need:
---1.5 week to finish modeling and texturing
---2 weeks to rig
---1week to do animation test.

October =>>> Finish lion character
November =>>> Animate film with filler environment models
December =>>> Render one section of film for review panel

Short Update

This has been a busy week, I refined my animatic according to last week's feedback, and I tried to settle down on the lion's look.

When the wings are folded, I will shrink it a little bit so it does not get in the way that much.

When wings are stretched out, it'll be bigger.

Shorter Animatic

I colored in the bedroom concept art.

The flower that the girl wears will be a white lily flower. The symbolism seem to fit.

I have been switching between different tasks to keep things interesting. This is a textured model of the bottled-ship from the library.

I tried to trim my animatic by leaving out excess scenes and shortening several sequences. The animatic was 5 minutes before and now 3:50 minutes long.

Bye summer break

So... summer is over! I've been busy with summer school and projects in the latter half of summer,  this is a summary of what I've done during the first half:

Since the only concept art I drew was of the library, I began modeling the room!
this is the entire library modelled according to my concept art

there is nothing fancy with the topology, i'm just trying to keep it as low-poly as possible without loosing too much shape

at the end of the day, the textures will add most to the looks, so the untextured models WILL look boring at this stage!

ships in a bottle... this may be here because I just finished playing AC4!

yes, everything in the room has their UVs laid out!
book textures!

book textures on model! woot! :D

the pot of plant is textured too!

and side by side comparison of concept art and textured model

since this is the real deal, I painted out all the details that I couldn't include in my concept art
Other than the library, I've also started drawing the concept art for the girl's bedroom. I will start to color this very soon.

To-Do List:

-shorten the film down to around 2 mins
-color bedroom concept art
-continue texturing the library
-design and model lion character

Governess Character

governess concept art

3D model - head shots

3D model - whole body and size comparison to girl

Here's a quick walk cycle test, I haven't refined the animation fully, I just wanted to test her walk animation:

Animation Tests

Rigging is finally done. *long exhale*... I kept running into problems along the way but I finally fixed them all... for now.

So this is all of my ctrls(FK arms hidden) .. with color coding!

I made her limbs and head stretchy. I won't go that crazy with the squash and stretch though. When I animate, I'll just add in the stretch for a frame or two as I see fit. (Oh and her FK spine can be stretchy too)

---------------------------------------------------------

Now that the rig is ready to be tested, I made some animation tests with the girl. There are nothing major that I need to revise on rigging. Her foot size doesn't bother me. But I'll have to do something about the poppings in the legs.

Final Looks n Stuff

First of all, here is the link to my grad film proposal.

--------------------------------------------------

In Bob's Lighting n Rendering class, I decided to do some test renders of my grad film as the final project. Here is the night scene with the absence of the lion:

(for my final image, I took Bob's feedback and applied a settle rim light, it is really necessary since her hair is almost as dark as the night sky. Bob's other feedback was saying that the dome was a bit too claustrophobic, this I felt it too so I'll be careful next time when I re-model the dome.)

Andddd here are a couple behind-the-scenes images:

Zooming back!
Wireframe!
Set Exterior!

Again, I am hindered by too many rigging problems. At this moment, I still have a few more issues to fix, plus the weighting isn't perfect yet. I couldn't do any animation test with an imperfect rig. But I learned a lot this week, so that's great. Here are some things I did:

It's looking a bit messy since there are a lot of ctrls, but every one of them is needed!
It's my first time rigging with influence objects, but they are actually very handy and easy to work with.
I love twisting and posing the eyebrows around. Two ctrls are actually enough for this, I never knew.

*Gasp!*
Posing this creepy smile reminds me that I still need a ctrl that will move the whole mouth together.
Influence objects rig my dress pretty well too. This works easier than joints rig in my opinion.
TO-DO List for self:
-better weighting
-whole mouth ctrl
-fix R_arm ctrls
-add fingers ctrl for both hands
-animation test
